How It Works

Comparison

Tank vs. Tankless vs. Heat Pump Water Heater

Denver homeowners have three main options for water heating. Each type serves different needs. Tank water heaters are the most affordable upfront and work well for most homes. Tankless units provide unlimited hot water in a smaller footprint but cost more to install. Heat pump water heaters have the highest efficiency and qualify for the largest rebates, but need space for airflow and work best in unconditioned areas like basements or garages. The right choice depends on your household size, available space, existing fuel connections, and whether you want to minimize upfront cost or long-term operating cost. Below is a side-by-side comparison of all three types.

Rheem tank water heater

Tank Water Heaters

The most common type in Denver homes. Gas and electric models from Bradford White and Rheem in 40, 50, and 75 gallon sizes. Installation starts at $2,400 for a standard replacement. Tank water heaters are straightforward to install, especially when replacing an existing unit of the same fuel type. They do not qualify for utility or federal rebates, but they have the lowest upfront cost of the three types.
Tankless water heater installation

Tankless Water Heaters

On-demand hot water with no storage tank. We install Rinnai, Navien, and Bradford White tankless units. A tankless water heater heats water only when you turn on a faucet, so you never run out of hot water. The trade-off is higher upfront cost ($3,500 - $5,500 installed) and the need for adequate gas line capacity or electrical service. Tankless units last 20+ years, roughly double the lifespan of a tank water heater, which offsets the higher initial investment over time.
State Premier heat pump water heater

Heat Pump Water Heaters

Heat pump water heaters (hybrid water heaters) use heat pump technology to heat water 2-3x more efficiently than standard electric models. They pull heat from surrounding air and transfer it to the water tank, dramatically reducing energy consumption. The State Premier and Rheem Proterra are our most-installed models. Heat pump water heaters are the only type that qualifies for Xcel Energy rebates ($2,250) and HEAR federal rebates (up to $1,750 for income-qualified households). They need at least 700 cubic feet of airflow space, making basements and garages ideal locations. Installation runs $2,800 to $4,500 depending on existing electrical capacity and whether a dedicated circuit is needed.

Pricing

Water Heater Pricing Overview

All prices include the unit, labor, permits, old unit disposal, and code-compliant installation. Exact pricing depends on model, fuel type, and installation complexity. For detailed breakdowns by tank size and model, visit the dedicated page for each type.

Water Heater Rebates in Colorado

Standard tank and tankless water heaters do not qualify for rebate programs. Heat pump water heaters are the exception: Xcel Energy offers a $2,250 rebate applied as an instant discount at installation, and income-qualified households may also be eligible for HEAR federal rebates up to $1,750. The Colorado state heat pump tax credit also applies to heat pump water heaters. UniColorado processes all rebate paperwork on your behalf.
