The smartInvestment

Why a Mini-Split is the Right Choice for Your Home

Perfect for Any Space

No ductwork needed. Ductless mini splits connect indoor and outdoor units with a small conduit, making them ideal for older homes, additions, or rooms without existing ducts. Flexible placement with wall-mounted, floor-mounted, or ceiling-cassette options.

Zoned Comfort & Whisper-Quiet Operation

Independent temperature control for each room. Cool or heat only the rooms you need, no more paying to condition empty spaces. Ultra-low noise levels with the compressor located outside and advanced fan technology inside.

Energy Efficiency & Savings

No duct losses. Traditional HVAC systems can lose significant energy through duct leaks. Ductless mini splits eliminate this issue, delivering conditioned air directly to each room. Most models use variable-speed compressors, adjusting output to maintain a consistent indoor climate.

Low Maintenance & Healthier Air

Minimal upkeep without ducts to clean. Regular maintenance is as simple as changing or washing filters, plus occasional professional servicing. Advanced filtration systems capture dust, pollen, and other allergens, helping you breathe easier.

Eric F.

UniColorado had the best bid, the best heat pump system offering for my old home, listened to my requests and suggestions, and did a very clean installation of a full multizone Mitsubishi system with 2 ductless units in one day. They were professional and did excellent work. There was no cost increase for dealing with minor things - they just got it done and were nice to me the whole time. They have a really good electrician subcontractor. Definitely get a bid from Uni.

UniColorado installed a Mitsubishi ductless heat pump in our master bedroom. They did excellent work from start to finish. They are experts in installing these units and charged a fair price. The installation was seamless and the unit works and looks great. It has significantly enhanced the comfort of that room.

Afshin, Aydin, and the entire UniColorado team was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Originally we were looking for central AC and we got quotes from some HVAC companies to install a central AC system. When Afshin came in and took a look at our house, he immediately noticed that our current ducting would not allow us to get the level of cooling we’d be happy with through our hot Colorado summers. His primary concern was that we were actually satisfied with our investment long-term and after getting ductless mini-splits I can definitely say we are very happy! The entire UniColorado team is so knowledgeable and every person that walked through our door was so respectful of our house, always wearing shoe covers and cleaning up everything before heading out. I really could not recommend UniColorado enough and plan to use them in the future for any HVAC needs!

We were very pleased with the installation of our mini split system. It was very easy to schedule service with UniColorado and they always provided updates on arrival times and showed up when scheduled. Work was done professionally, very knowledgeable regarding their products, and were very responsive to all of my questions/concerns. Pricing was also very competitive. Afshin the Service Manager was very personable and easy to work with, I would highly recommend this company.

Why UniColorado?

Mini-splits solve problems ducted systems can't: additions without ductwork, rooms the main system misses, garages, basements. We've installed thousands of Mitsubishi hyper-heat units across the Denver metro, and they're our go-to recommendation for targeted heating and cooling. Each system is sized to the room, not the house, so you're not paying to condition space you don't use. We handle rebate paperwork upfront. You see the savings at signing.

Diamond Contractor

Why Mitsubishi for Mini-Splits

Mitsubishi Electric is the industry leader in ductless technology. They hold more patents in mini-split systems than any other manufacturer and pioneered cold climate ductless heating for markets like Colorado. As a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor (the highest dealer tier), UniColorado has factory-trained installers, access to the full product line, and the ability to offer 12-year extended warranties on parts and compressors. Mitsubishi's Hyper-Heat H2i technology maintains full heating capacity down to -13°F using enhanced inverter compressors and vapor injection. Standard mini-splits from other brands start losing capacity at 30°F. For Denver's climate, that difference matters. We also install Bosch mini-splits for specific applications, but Mitsubishi is our primary recommendation for ductless systems based on performance, reliability, and warranty support.
Ductless mini-split systems

The basics

What is a MiniSplit?

A mini-split is a split system with a compact outdoor unit. It can be ductless (wall-mounted, floor-mounted, or ceiling cassette units) or ducted (air handlers connected to ductwork). Ductless mini-splits deliver conditioned air directly into specific zones with no ductwork, ideal for homes without ducts, additions, or targeted comfort. Ducted mini-splits use standard air handlers connected to ductwork, just like traditional HVAC. The 'mini' refers to the outdoor unit size, not the indoor equipment.
Mini-split installation options

Perfect for any space

Is a MiniSplit the right choice for your home?

Ductless mini splits connect indoor and outdoor units with a small conduit, making them ideal for older homes, additions, or rooms without existing ducts. Indoor air handlers can be wall-mounted, floor-mounted, or ceiling-cassette style, giving you options to fit any room layout. Cool (or heat, if you choose a model with heating) only the rooms you need. No more paying to condition empty spaces. With the compressor located outside and advanced fan technology inside, ductless mini splits help maintain a calm, comfortable atmosphere.
Types of mini-split indoor units

Know your options

Types of Mini-Split Systems

Mini-splits come in several form factors, and you can mix different types on the same outdoor unit. Ductless wall-mount units are the most common and affordable. They mount high on an interior wall and deliver air directly into the room. Ceiling cassettes flush-mount into a drop ceiling for a clean, commercial look. Floor-mount units sit at baseboard height, a good fit for rooms with large windows or limited wall space. Ducted mini-splits hide the air handler in a closet or attic and connect to short duct runs. You get the efficiency of a mini-split with no visible indoor unit. Hybrid systems combine multiple types on one outdoor condenser: ducted heads in the hallway, wall-mounts in the bedrooms, a cassette in the kitchen. Not sure which combination works for your home? Our comfort advisors assess every room during a free estimate and recommend the best fit. For a deeper dive into room-by-room sizing, see our mini-split sizing guide.
Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat H2i cold climate mini-split overview

Colorado climate matters

Standard vs Cold Climate Mini-Splits

Standard mini-split heat pumps operate efficiently down to about 30°F. Below that, their heating capacity drops and they rely on electric backup heat, which costs 2–3x more to run. Cold climate mini-splits (like Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat) maintain full heating capacity to -13°F using enhanced inverter compressors and vapor injection technology. In Denver, where winter design temperatures hit 5°F and overnight lows regularly dip into the teens, cold climate is the right choice for any heat-pump-only installation. Standard models still make sense for cooling-only applications or homes with a gas furnace for backup. Cold climate models also qualify for larger rebates: Xcel Energy's per-ton incentives require cold climate certification. The price difference is $500–$1,000 per zone, a small premium for all-winter reliability and bigger rebate checks.
Floor-mount mini-split unit replacing a boiler system

No ductwork required

Replacing Your Boiler with a Mini-Split

Many older Denver homes, especially in Capitol Hill, Park Hill, and Wash Park, have hot water boiler systems with radiators. When the boiler ages out, homeowners face a decision: replace with another boiler ($8,000–$15,000), add ductwork for a traditional furnace+AC ($15,000–$25,000), or switch to ductless mini-splits. Mini-splits are the natural fit for boiler homes because there's no ductwork to install. A 3-zone cold climate system covers the main living areas for $13,000–$20,000, delivers both heating and cooling (boilers only heat), and qualifies for electrification incentives from Xcel Energy and the state of Colorado. Zoned comfort is an upgrade over radiators: individual temperature control room by room, quiet operation, and built-in air filtration. The conversion is straightforward. We mount indoor heads on walls, run refrigerant lines through small 3-inch penetrations, and set the outdoor condenser on a pad outside.
Cooling-only ductless mini-split AC unit

AC without the ductwork

Cooling-Only Mini-Splits

Not all mini-splits are heat pumps. Cooling-only mini-split systems provide ductless air conditioning without heating capability. These AC-only units cost $500-$1,500 less per zone than heat pump models, making them an economical choice for Denver homes that already have a furnace. Perfect for adding cooling to garages, sunrooms, bonus rooms, or server rooms where you don't need heating. Since they only cool, there's no need for a cold-climate rating: they're optimized purely for summer comfort. In Colorado's dry climate with a shorter cooling season (June-September), cooling-only models make practical sense if you're satisfied with your existing furnace.
Cooling-only vs heat pump mini-split comparison

Making the right choice

When to Choose Cooling-Only vs Heat Pump Mini-Split

Choose a cooling-only mini-split only when Xcel Energy rebates don't apply to you (e.g., ineligible area or rebates already used) and you have a functioning furnace with no need for heating. Cooling-only units cost less at list price, but heat pump models with Xcel rebates can be cheaper out-of-pocket. Choose a heat pump mini-split if you're replacing your furnace too, want year-round comfort from one system, or want to maximize rebate opportunities: heat pump models qualify for larger incentives from Xcel Energy. For Denver homes with existing gas or electric heat, adding cooling-only mini-splits to strategic zones (master bedroom, home office, bonus room) provides targeted comfort without the expense of whole-home ductwork, but only when rebates don't apply. Heat pump models make more sense for new construction, major renovations, or replacing an aging furnace and AC simultaneously.

Whole-home coverage

Can a Mini-Split Heat and Cool a Whole House?

Yes, with caveats. Multi-zone mini-splits can heat and cool an entire home if the layout allows it. Open-plan homes work best: a single 3-4 zone MXZ condenser with indoor heads in the main living areas provides coverage for most of the house. Each indoor unit controls its own zone independently, so bedrooms stay cool while the living room stays warm. Closed rooms with doors are the main challenge. A wall-mounted unit in a hallway won't effectively condition a closed bedroom at the other end. Rooms that stay closed need their own dedicated indoor head. Most Denver homeowners use a hybrid approach: mini-splits for primary living spaces (master bedroom, living area, home office) combined with an existing furnace for backup or rarely-used rooms like guest bedrooms. For true whole-home coverage in a typical 2,000 sq ft home, plan for 3-4 indoor units. Use our zone planner tool above to map out a configuration for your home, or schedule a free estimate for a professional load calculation.

Pricing

What Does Mini-Split Installation Cost?

A single-zone mini-split starts at $5,000-$10,000 installed. Multi-zone systems (2-4 rooms) run $9,000-$20,000. Cold-climate models qualify for Xcel Energy rebates up to $2,250 per ton, which can cut $4,500-$11,250 off the total depending on system size. We apply rebates as instant discounts on your invoice. For a detailed breakdown by zone count and system type, see our full mini-split pricing guide.
