Xcel Heat Pump Rebates Drop October 1: What Denver Homeowners Need to Know

On August 5, 2026, Xcel Energy notified its Colorado trade partners, UniColorado included, that bonuses for heat pumps and heat pump water heaters will be reduced effective October 1, 2026. The bonus drops from three times to two times the standard rebate for residential customers who heat their homes with Xcel natural gas or have a gas or propane water heater. Xcel's stated reason: keeping its Colorado clean energy programs within the budget limits approved by the Public Utilities Commission. Heat pump adoption grew faster than the program planned for.

The new residential amounts, base rebate plus bonus:

• Cold climate air-source heat pumps: $2,250 per heating ton at 5°F drops to $1,500 per heating ton
• Standard air-source heat pumps: $900 per cooling ton at 95°F drops to $600 per cooling ton
• Heat pump water heaters: $2,250 flat drops to $1,500 flat
• Ground-source heat pumps: $3,300 per heating ton drops to $2,200 per heating ton

Every category is cut by one third. This is the bonus multiplier changing, not the standard rebate. Xcel's Clean Heat Plan tripled these rebates when it took effect; as of October 1 they are doubled instead.

Xcel set two hard dates, and the second one catches people off guard:

• Before October 1, 2026: equipment must be installed and invoiced. A signed contract is not enough. A scheduled install is not enough. The system has to be in, running, and invoiced by September 30.
• By October 15, 2026: the rebate application must be submitted to Xcel. Applications received after October 15 are processed at the new, lower amounts regardless of when the equipment was installed.

That second rule is the trap. You could have a system installed in August, and if the application sits until late October, the rebate is paid at the reduced amount. This is one of the places where your contractor choice directly costs or saves you money. UniColorado files the application ourselves, promptly, as part of every install. You do not fill out a single form, and you do not carry the risk of a missed filing window.

Practically, the install deadline backed up into a booking deadline. Our estimate-to-install timeline meant mid-September was the latest anyone could book and still be installed and invoiced before October 1. As of September 14, our September calendar is full, so a new estimate now leads to an October install and the reduced amounts. Installs already on the September calendar are not affected.

Most Denver-area homes need a 3 or 4 ton cold climate system. Here is the same install, before and after October 1:

• 3-ton cold climate: $6,750 now, $4,500 after October 1. You lose $2,250.
• 4-ton cold climate: $9,000 now, $6,000 after October 1. You lose $3,000.
• Heat pump water heater: $2,250 now, $1,500 after. You lose $750.

The rest of the stack still applies either way: the Colorado state tax credit ($1,000) and Power Ahead Colorado ($1,500, no income limit). On a 3-ton cold climate install invoiced before October 1, the full stack is around $9,250. The same project installed in October comes to about $7,000.

A few carve-outs worth knowing:

• Standard rebate amounts are unchanged. Only the bonus multiplier drops.
• Electric-baseline customers are unchanged. If you heat with electric equipment (baseboard, for example) and have Xcel electric service, you qualify for standard rebate amounts before and after October 1.
• Ductless systems covering at least 50% of the home's heating load still qualify for the 2x bonus after October 1. Supplemental ductless units that condition a previously unconditioned space, or cover less than 50% of the load, move to a flat $500 rebate. That change was originally set for August 15 and was postponed to October 1.
• Mountain Energy Project, Aurora F-3 and Pearl Street Project bonuses are not affected.
• Air-to-water heat pumps get their first rebate on October 1: a $1,900 per heating ton bonus.

The Whole Home Efficiency bonus track is included in the reduction, so WHE-eligible projects face the same deadline.

As of September 14, our September install calendar is full. An estimate booked now leads to an October install, and here is what that looks like:

• The estimate visit works the same way. We come out, size the system, and email you the pricing afterward.
• The pricing you receive shows October rebate amounts. On a 3-ton cold climate system that is $4,500 from Xcel, plus the state tax credit and Power Ahead Colorado, for about $7,000 in combined incentives. Still applied as an upfront discount, still filed by us.
• We are working to keep your final number close to current pricing. The Xcel rebate is one line on the invoice. For October installs we are making a good faith effort to match our current pricing on the rest, so the change in that one line affects your total as little as possible.
