How to avoid high energy costs in the summer
Do you have an AC in your house? In the U.S air conditioning costs homeowners $11 billion per year. Even space heating, which is 42% of home energy use is usually in the cold-months and the cost is spread-out. Air conditioning on the other hand has highly concentrated use on the hottest days of the year, specially when it has to work harder to compensate. We have provided some tips below to help you save some money this summer and not break the bank.
Give your AC a check-up – or replace it.
This one is perhaps the easiest one on the list, and most important. Clearing a clogged A/C indoor unit alone can save 5 to 10 percent in energy use – and will help the unit work not as much. If your air conditioner is more than ten years old, it may be time for a new one, which could save lots of energy in no-time if it’s more efficient than what you have. The difference between a 10-SEER AC and a 16SEER rating is up to 20% saving in energy costs.
Adjust your thermostat:
Many consumers don’t realize that thermostats are not an exact science, meaning even if you set to a lower temperature, it doesn’t necessarily mean the system will reach it. It does mean, however, that the system will continue running. Did you know that a study found that each degree that a thermostat is set above 75⁰F could save 10% to 15% in energy costs? Many experts (such as ourselves) recommend setting the temperature at 74⁰F on hot days, and 80⁰F – 83⁰F when you’re outside the house. A programmable thermostat can make your life a lot easier.
Turn off the registers in the rooms you are not using:
This may seem like a no-brainer, but many consumers leave their registers open in rooms that don’t or barely use. Closing each unused register lowers the load on the system and saves you money.
Now, there are other ways to keep your house cooler. You can paint your rooftop a lighter color, get better shades/blinds, open the windows at night and more. However, the best choice is to make sure your AC system is running in tip-top shape and not wasting your hard earned money.
